Singapore Enacts Spam Control Act (June 2007)

The Spam Control Act 2007 came into effect in Singapore on 15 June 2007. It aims to address the still-growing and global problem of unsolicited commercial electronic messages sent in bulk, otherwise known as "spam".

While the Act was passed in response to email spam; its provisions also covers electronic messaging or SMS.

Under the Act, marketers - particularly those based in Singapore or who have operations here - who continue to spam the "not interested" group face potential financial penalties. The statutory penalty is $25 for each electronic message, up to a total of $1 million.

Globally, similar laws have been introduced for instance in the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and South Korea.

CNN to provide SMS breaking news service  (June 2007) 

Set to go live in June this year, this service allows users to receive a headline alert as text message to their mobile phone as soon as a major international news story breaks. SMS as a messaging aggregation and delivery solution ensures that users of the CNN service receive breaking news information via SMS as it happens, immediately and reliably, wherever they are in the world. A New Way to Shop (August 2007)

A US company called ShopText has introduced a system that lets US mobile phone customers buy products in magazine ads via SMS. When the shopper sees a Shoptext-enabeld ad, they key in their Pin Number, and  Shoptext then delivers the good. A new way to shop....
